Cafe Loetje €€

Food at Cafe Loetje

I’m on a quest to find the best steak in Amsterdam and Cafe Loetje was recommended to me by my 85-year-old Dutch teacher who lives nearby. It was indeed excellent. Of the 2 steaks pictured, the big chunk (whole and sliced open) is the large portion and the plate with 2 pieces is the smaller option.  You get a choice of with or without Bali sauce. The Bali sauce is sambal based and chili spicy and on the smaller steak in the pics. I think it detracts from the flavor of the meat and their standard steak to me was better. The larger portion is the one to go for. It is very generously sized and has a lot of flavors tucked in there, quite delicious and tender, I see what all the fuss is about. The fries were excellent, truly, and the salad was a salad, ordered as a nod to healthy eating and getting portions of greens in.

Prices: large steak €28, regular €19.  salad €4.75, fries €3.40.

Kitchen Open: 7 days a week, 10am to 10.30pm

Reservations:  They have 4 tables for 6 people (or more) that they will take reservations for but on Friday and Saturday you can only reserve these tables for 6pm.  All the rest of the tables are for people walking in.  I arrived at 6pm on a Wednesday in spring and got one of the last tables available but the turnover is quickish and there is a bar where you can have a drink if you need to wait for a table.
