Breakfast in Amsterdam

Eggs Benedict at Greenwoods

Breakfast in Amsterdam

One of the things I love about travel is eating out and I prefer it if each meal is a great meal. I also tend to do a lot of walking on tours as well as just exploring on my own so breakfast is a really important meal for me. I try places for breakfast in Amsterdam all the time and below are what I think are the best places, scattered around the city so there should hopefully always be somewhere near you. You will notice by my photos below that am drawn to eggs and salmon or bacon so that’s what I judge a place on. Croissant, fruit and muesli is not really my thing in the morning but all the places have that kind of breakfast too. I’ve included a menu link where possible. The list below is not in any specific order, that would be much too hard, I think they are all great!

At the end of this post is a map with all the below places marked. I’ve also added the start point of my small group Amserdam Walking Tour on the map, that is the yellow icon, so you can see where the breakfast cafe is in relation to that.

Bakers & Roasters

Bakers & Roasters are great for breakfast/brunch. Their menu is extensive and service cheerful. Check out their menu to get just how interesting the offerings are. There’s a lot of Brazilian as well as Kiwi influence, as the place was started by 2 guys from those countries who missed their home country breakfasts so produce them here.

The cakes and tarts are absolutely delicious so its a great place for afternoon cake and coffee.

There are 2 branches, one in the east centre, and one in De Pijp. Both are open from 08h30 to 16h00 and serve breakfast all day. You cannot make a reservation so might have to wait at busy times but you can add yourself to an online waiting list on their website.

Greenwoods

Greenwoods has been creating happy customers with their all-day breakfast for years now. Above is the always satisfying ‘Eggs Royale’ as well as ‘The Beast’ which is spinach, pulled pork, perfectly poached eggs with Hollandaise sauce.  They have full English breakfasts, lunch offerings like salads and burgers and cakes & high tea etc but their poached eggs on muffin varieties are what keep me coming back for breakfast.

It’s best to ring them to book a table as they get really busy. Call well ahead if you know your schedule. They don’t accept reservations on the weekends though, only Monday to Fridays you can reserve by phone or on their website and check out their menu there too. They serve breakfast all day but also have a great selection of lunch and high tea options.

Branch at Singel 103 – Open 9am to 4pm daily– Tel – 0031(0)20-6237071

Branch at Keizersgracht 465 – Open 9:30am to 6pm daily  – Tel – 0031(0)20-4204 330

Cafe@Droog

Breakfast in Amsterdam at Cafe Droog

Droog is a design / store / movement / cultural space and has a lovely airy cafe upstairs that is great for a quiet breakfast in very agreeable surroundings, with excellent coffee. They always use sockeye smoked salmon which hits the spot for me. They also have bacon and a bunch of healthy breakfasts too! There is a menu link on their home page and you can see how nice the cafe is too. On their lunch menu, the mini platter is great value and delicious. Open 9am to 7pm, they serve breakfast all day.

Betty Blue

Breakfast in Amsterdam at Betty BlueI have never had a breakfast quite like this before, see the picture above. This is the ‘Chicken & Waffle Supreme: Waffles with marinaded chicken, bacon, cheddar, fried egg & whisky sauce’. Admittedly this was at brunch time not breakfast time. It was indeed tasty and a very unusual mix of flavours, not least of all because of the bursts of sugar in the Belgian style waffle.

They have an extensive menu but this is not online and they serve breakfast all day. The opening hours are Monday to Saturday, 8:30am to 6pm and on Sundays they open an hour later, so 9:30am to  6pm.

You can call them to reserve on +31 (0)20-8100924

The Lobby

Breakfast in Amsterdam at The Lobby

The Lobby is the cafe/restaurant of Hotel V. There are a few branches but the one I tried is the one right in the centre of Amsterdam, in a street called Nes which runs off Dam Square, so more central is almost impossible. My Eggs Royale was excellent and the service quick and the cafe nicely decorated. Here is their menu. They serve breakfast from 7am to 11:30am. I don’ t think you need to book but it doesn’t hurt to. Tel +31 (0)20 7585 275

Kessens

Breakfast in Amsterdam at Kessens

Kessens is located on a busy, not particularly nice street but once inside it is a pleasant place to be with cafe style round tables near the windows but a roomy area in the back with larger tables and more comfortable chairs and a pleasing skylight window. I tried their breakfast at lunch time so it was quite busy but wow, was it worth it! It looks simple enough above but was superb quality. The salmon was melt in the mouth, delicately flavoured, the eggs light and creamy and flavoursome. The toast was great, the potions were perfect. The plate was annoyingly small but for the quality of the food I can happily put up with that. The lunch dishes I saw going by looked particularly good too.

There full menu is online and they are open from 8:30am on weekdays and 9am on weekends and close at 5pm or 6pm and serve their breakfast menu all day. You can find them at Rozengracht 24 and make a reservation by calling +31(0)20-221 7431

Scandinavian Embassy

Scandinavian Embassy has been on my list as a place to try coffee for ages. Indeed the coffee was super. They have all sorts of fancy kinds and brews but the bog standard late hit the spot with me.

What actually got me off my butt and across town on a cold winter morning was a review I read about their eggs royale. It was lovely, full of flavour cured salmon, perfect poached egg, a bed of leaves, toasted Scandinavian rye bread.

I’m really not a fan of rye bread so was a bit disappointed that it was the only option to have with my poached egg but it was excellent and I would gladly eat it again. It was light, not like the heavy stuff they sell in supermarkets here. The toast and cheese & jam plate that my friend had was tasty too.

They are located in de Pijp, close to the Albert Cuyp street market, the actual street address is Sarphartipark 24 and you can phone them on +31 681 600 140. The opening hours are 8am on weekdays and 9am on weekends, closing at 6pm, healthy breakfasts and lunches served all day. They don’t have a menu online.

Omelegg

Food at Omelegg

Omelegg has been incredibly popular and successful for a while now and I’ve been a bit slow about trying their famous omelettes.  It was fine, it was moist and very generously filled with smoked salmon, chives, cream cheese and citrus zest which worked really well.  I had apple juice which was excellent along with an equally good cup of coffee. Service and food were quick and there is a nice big table at the back of the restaurant with newspapers and magazines that is nice if you are eating alone.  They have 2 branches, one in De Pijp, where I went and one close to Central Station on the Red Light District side of town.  The total cost was €14.60 which I think is a bargain for the quality and quantity.
