De Belhamel – French – €€
De Belhamel is a long-established and much-loved restaurant in Amsterdam and I don’t know why it took me so long to eat there. Well, I did today and it was fabulous. It is the kind of place you can really push the boat out and have a superb – and to be fair pricey – meal or pop in and have a casual lunch at regular prices. I did both!
The location is spectacular, it is a south-facing building on the lovely Brouwersgracht, looking down the Herengracht. This type of view in Amsterdam is exceptionally rare, there are only 13 houses on such junctions and this is, I believe, the only restaurant. There is a terrace for fine days and inside is split level maximizing the lovely and romantic view. The decor is art-nouveau, rare in Amsterdam, and rich and cozy.
Pictured above are what I’ve tried so far. Every mouthful was delicious!
