Private Amsterdam Red Light District Tour
The New Red Light District Tour Format
Join me, Mark, on my Private Amsterdam Red Light District Tour and have an intimite experience with area without the need for a post-visit shower! You will walk away with a wealth of knowledge and a broader understanding of this complicated subject. No visit to Amsterdam would be complete without touring the city’s most famous / infamous neighborhood.
Currently Red Light District tours are banned so beware, when you see a tour being offered it won’t go into the actual neighbourhood. Many operators will probably talk about the area on the outskirts and then send you in alone afterwards.
I have found a way of giving a tour of the area and staying within the law! I cannot walk you through the area and stop and talk opposite the windows like I used to. However, I can walk you through the area to a place where we have an appointment, and then walk you out again. So here is the format of the tour:
Part 1 – Cafe with Intro
We meet at a cafe near Central Station, have a drink and a talk about the following topics:
- The history of the Red Light District and of prostitution in general in Amsterdam
- Today’s legal framework and the good elements of legalisation
- How sexworkers rent their spaces and what’s included
- How much sexworkers tend to charge their clients and how to negotiate
- Security in the area and the role of the management companies and the police
- Demographics among sexworkers
Part 2 – Walk & ‘Museum’ Visit
After this intro chat we walk through some of the alleys and past the famous windows to the Red Light Secrets Museum where we have a timed appointment. During our walk you will know what to look out for as we pass the windows, like the security cameras and siren alarms that I explained earlier in the cafe. I will show you through the ‘museum’ and explain which things are authentic and which not. They have some good info but unfortunately they also promote misinformation about the area and industry. We get to stand behind an old red light brothel window and see a couple of the types of working rooms there. The museum is in what used to be an actual window brothel that was closed down.
Part 3 – Walk and Cafe Wrap Up
After we are done there we walk out of the district in a different direction, through other red light alleys to another cafe where we talk about:
- How the Amsterdam City Council has been trying to shut down and move the district
- The down side of leganisation and how it has actually been detrimental to the rights of the workers.
- Other formats of sexwork in the Netherlands
- Different legal frameworks around the world and their pros and cons
- Any questions that you have about the area and the industry.
My many years of research , both as a guide, and also as a fieldworker for the sex workers’ union have involved visiting a variety of establishments throughout Amsterdam and the rest of the Netherlands. These include Red Light Districts, private house brothels, sex clubs, and even a couple of street-walking zones. The goal was to identify any challenges sex workers faced and ensure that regulations were being followed. The Private Amsterdam Red Light District Tour provides insights into these experiences and the realities of the industry.
